The Skischaukel Salzburg-Tyrol Ski Network
A new mountain railway starts running in winter 2016 under the title "TirolS – Two states. One train" because it connects not only two ski areas but also the states of Tyrol and Salzburg! The construction of this railway will increase the amount of accessible slopes by 25%. The future Skicircus Saalbach-Hinterglemm-Leogang-Fieberbrunn* ski resort, with a total of 270km of slopes and 70 lifts of various types, will be the largest interconnected ski resort in Austria and one of the largest worldwide. The mountain station of the TirolS-Bahn railway, the connection point of the new ski network, is located directly above the Gartenhotel Theresia and the Hotel Johann – next to the "Sunliner" mountain station (please see the panoramic aerial image).
*Something the locals have long speculated about has now been officially confirmed: the PillerseeTal (with the Hochfilzen, Fieberbrunn, St Ulrich and Waidring) is the true "snow trap" of the Kitzbühel Alps and the snowiest region in Tyrol.
Hochfilzen (by Fieberbrunn) is clearly the snowiest village by far when compared to the other villages in Tyrol. In both the comparison of data since 1895, as well as the current 30-year average, Hochfilzen (with 671cm of new snow) is far above even villages at higher altitude locations. This was revealed thanks to a detailed study by Tyrolean skiing tourism researcher Günther Aigner, who considered both the official measurement series of the past 30 years and the records of the hydrographic service of Tyrol since 1895.
